Reorientation therapy: questions and answers

Are all homosexuals gay?

“Gay” is the identity that a person chooses for yourself. Not all homosexual people identify as “gay.” People who do not identify as gay believe that they are essentially heterosexual and seek help in identifying the specific reasons why they experience an undesirable same-sex attraction. During therapy, counselors and psychologists use ethical methods to help clients establish the reasons for their same-sex attraction and sensitively help them resolve the underlying factors leading to homosexual feelings. These people, who are an integral part of our society, strive to protect their right to receive help and support to get rid of unwanted same-sex attraction, change their sexual orientation and / or preserve celibacy. This is achieved through gender mainstreaming programs, including counseling and heterosexuality treatment, also known as “Sexual Orientation Intervention” (SOCE) or Reorientation Therapy.

Why are gay activists trying to ban heterosexually-approving therapy?

Gay activist organizations instruct their members to reject ex-gay and undesirable same-sex individuals who refuse to identify as gay, primarily because they do not support the myth that homosexuals are born. In 2008, the American Psychological Association stated: “Although many studies have examined the possible genetic, hormonal, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no data have been identified that allows scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors.". Homosexuality has many causes, and people perceive them differently in their lives. Some people prefer to turn to a consultation that will help them eliminate the unwanted same-sex drive, and this threatens the political agenda of gay activists.

Is heterosexual-approving therapy different from any other psychotherapy?

Not. Counselors practicing reorientation therapy have a diploma and provide psychological services on a wide range of issues, including undesirable same-sex attraction. Critics falsely describe reorientation therapy as an invalid or even dangerous method of therapeutic treatment, while others call it an attempt to “suppress homosexuality,” which relies on purely behavioral methods. Such descriptions are false and do not reflect the work of certified mental health professionals practicing reorientation therapy.

Will children be denied access to adequate psychiatric care if heterosexual-approved therapy is banned?

Yes. Children who are seduced by adults of the same gender and unsure of their sexual orientation due to sexual violence will be denied access to therapy simply because it does not affirm homosexuality. In fact, the child is molested twice - first by the criminal, and then by the political situation, which refuses to provide therapy to the child, if it is not gay affirmative.

Is heterosexuallyaffirming is the therapy harmful?

Some gay activists claim that reorientation therapy is obviously harmful and can lead a teenager to anxiety, depression and / or suicide. Nevertheless, there is not a single peer-reviewed scientific study that would examine minors who underwent reorientation therapy, therefore all allegations that such therapy is harmful and ineffective are unfounded.

Bills to ban reorientation therapy are based solely on political statements from the so-called mainstream psychiatry and healthcare, such as the American Psychological Association (APA), which in 2009 created a Task Force consisting solely of homosexual and gay affirmative psychologists. Not only did the Task Force refuse to accept psychologists and certified psychotherapists who actually worked with clients as part of reorientation therapy and / or were former homosexuals, all members of this Task Force are known as long-standing opponents of reorientation therapy for philosophical and political reasons.

The APA task force in its report advises parents not to resort to reorientation therapy for their children. Bills prohibiting heterosexual affirmative therapy only cite the views of the APA and other "mainstream" organizations, ignoring the recommendations of the American Association of Christian Psychologists (AACC), the National Association for the Study and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) and the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds), all those who support the client's right to resolve unwanted same-sex attraction and the right of parents to decide what medical and mental treatment is best for their family and children. In total, these organizations are made up of over 50 certified mental and medical health professionals.

Is there any evidence to support the effectiveness of heterosexually-validating therapy?

Yes, 100 years of research, in fact. In 2009, the National Association for the Study and Therapy of Homosexuality conducted a comprehensive literature review on the topic of reorientation and concluded that some men and women could move from homosexuality to heterosexuality and that measures to change sexual orientation were not necessarily harmful. In addition, Dr. James Phelan's groundbreaking book was released in 2014 “Successful results of reorientation therapy”In which 100 years of research are presented, along with an exhaustive bibliographic review of documented successes demonstrating that therapy has helped some clients eliminate their unwanted same-sex drive and feel heterosexual.

Do parents of their children force heterosexually-approving therapy?

Some anti-gay activists have charged that parents forced their children to undergo re-orientation therapy activities, including in camps that allegedly used aversive conversion methods (i.e., electroshock). Such allegations are absolute myths that have been investigated and disproved, but nevertheless they are used as a scare tactic to encourage lawmakers to prohibit heterosexually-approving therapy, while at the same time allowing the practice of gay-approving therapy. Moreover, if gay activists are so preoccupied with aversive therapy, then why not ban aversive therapy altogether instead of trying to ban only reorientation therapy? (For reference, currently about 1 million patients a year receive electroshock therapy in the treatment of depression, catatonia, manic syndrome, etc. - approx. Per.)

Bills prohibiting reorientation therapy threaten people's constitutional right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as well as the right to meet with a psychologist guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to help the client resolve an undesirable same-sex attraction so that he can remain faithful to his spiritual beliefs. All parents, children and families deserve the right to their own self-determination and should not be forced to choose between their psychologist and religion.
