From apologists for same-sex relationships, one can often hear that homosexuality was the norm in the ancient world, especially in ancient Rome and Greece. In fact, the myth of the “homosexual utopia” in ancient Greece was popularized by Oscar Wilde, who was convicted of sodomy, and the fragmentary evidence that has come down to us in the form of ancient texts and works of art indicates rather the opposite. Throughout human history, homosexuality, especially in a passive role, has existed as a shameful and marginal phenomenon. It was only in rotten civilizations during their decline that same-sex practices may have gained some ground, but even then, attraction to members of the same sex more strongly than to members of the opposite was considered outside the norm. Nowhere and never until now have exclusively homosexual relations between adults been sanctioned.
